Matemo Fishing
@ Matemo Island Resort

The protected waters around Matemo Island offer some of the most spectacular fishing in the world. Unspoilt and largely unexplored, the Indian Ocean here with its deep Mozambique Channel harbours some of the most exciting game fish to to catch and release - species such as kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, mackerel and yellowfin tuna.

Fishing at Matemo can be enjoyed either by boat or from the beach. Our fishing boats include a 31ft Gulfcraft. All fishing tackle is provided on the fishing trips. Rods and reels are all of the highest quality.
The game fishing in the waters surrounding Matemo Island is nothing short of spectacular. Game fish species found include Kingfish, Barracuda, Dorado, Queenfish, Serra, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna and Sailfish.

All billfish are strictly catch-and-release. Fishing by boat is conducted either as a half day (4 hours) of full day (8 hours) excursion. Both excursions include fuel, skipper, tackle, bait and a limited amount of cool drinks. Alcoholic beverages are available but will be charged on consumption at bar prices.
Shore fishing can be done either from the sand spit or the rocks below the bar area. We have a limited supply of fishing equipment for shore fishing; therefore it is on a first-come first-served basis.

Mozambique Fishing, Matemo Island
With deep water occurring close to Matemo Island, fishing enthusiasts don't have to travel far for thrilling encounters with big game fish. The protected Quirimbas waters around Matemo produce some of the most exciting game fish to catch and release - kingfish, barracuda, dorado, queenfish, Sierra, wahoo, dog-tooth tuna and sailfish. Sailfish season is between July and December on the Mozambique coast, whilst peak activity for wahoo occurs from September to April and for dorado from October to March. Yellowfin tuna is a main target species, with big shoals found around Matemo all year round. Kingfish are also present all year round and their size and sheer power makes them one of the most sought-after quarry of serious fishermen.

Our fishing boat, Caldeira, is a Gulf Craft 31"Dolphin Super Deluxe, powered by two 115hp Yamaha outboard motors and offers an extended T-Top to shield our guests from the tropical Mozambique sun. On board, our captain and gillie will present you with tackle, lures and bait, and will ensure that you have the best professional guidance, whatever your fishing ability.

One of the world's most renowned fishing destinations is accessible from Matemo: the St Lazarus Banks, a sea mountain 20 x 30 km in extent, rises from 2,4 km deep to within six metres of the ocean surface bringing together a fascinating combination of marine life. We offer luxury live-aboard boat trips to St Lazarus Banks for the ultimate game fishing extravaganza.
